I sometimes wander over to NutritionFacts.org to while my minutes – sometimes hours – away catching up on the newest and most shock-worthy healthy information I can find.
Today was one of those days.
I decided to give the following video a watch: Do Vegetarians Get Enough Protein?
Did you watch it!?
Were you shocked!?
First of all, less than 3% of people were deficient in protein, and that it by far the one nutrient that is thrown around consistently in attempts scare plant-based eaters into carving up a big ol’ steak. Pretty much the only people within that 3% are not getting enough of any nutrients, however, so this is not an area I feel the need to be concerned about.
In fact, according to the studies,
“Vegetarians and vegans get 70% more protein than they need every day.”
On the flip side of that coin, 97% of Americans are NOT getting enough Fiber in their daily eating plans.
That is a statistic that blows my mind.
It was shocking enough to lead me to ask this question on my Facebook profile today:
I hope that a few more answers go up, but as of writing this post at least 50% of the answers didn’t know that there was no fiber at all in steak. Moreover, for a profile that generally gets considerably more engagement, the crickets chirped on this one. I hazard a guess that few people were sure enough of their answers to publicly share an opinion.
If that wasn’t enough, I did a search on Pexels.com – one of my favourite stock photo websites – for “fiber.” Usually I am offered up a vast collection of gorgeous images to choose from, regardless of the obscurity of the search term. Today? Two pictures:
Yup, that is chocolate cereal on the one side (healthy! not.) and wool on the other (yum!) Just to be safe, I even checked the Canadian / British spelling: Fibre
Well, at least that’s a whole food item. But…it was awfully lonely up there by itself on the page.
Fiber is apparently a topic that requires a lot more discussion for, how are we to be expected to increase our consumption, if we have no idea what to eat the includes fiber?
Short answer: Eat more plants.
